日仏文化交渉史という観点から、19世紀末の美術史を研究してきた。現在は、ジャポニスムなどの事象や万国博覧会についての研究をとおして「日本美術」とは何かを再考することに関心がある。これまでのおもな活動では、2001年名古屋と京都で行われた「没後100年記念エミールガレ展」の共同監修、共編著には従来の地域史から、地域や「国家」といった枠組みを越えてグローバルヒストリーを叙述するという新たな試みであるTranslation, History and Arts（Cambridge Scholars Publishing、2013）がある。2011年、京都大学人間環境学研究科を修了。

UKAI Atsuko is a project researcher of Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia. She received her　doctrate in 2011 from Kyoto University.　Her main research interest is to reconsider "Japanese Art" focusing on elements such as the Japonisme phenomenon and Universal Expositions.　She co-directed the Exhibition "Emile Gallé " in Nagoya and Kyoto, 2004.
