Workshop "Nations, Empires and Other World Products: Making Narratives Across BordersNations, Empires and Other World Products: Making Narratives Across Borders"(2020.1.10)

/ 2

Nations, Empires and Other World Products: Making Narratives Across Borders”と題するワークショップが開催された。
Sano Mayuko, “Fighting ‘the warfare of peacetime’: Japan’s quest for national narratives during the late nineteenth century”

Silvia Sebastiani, “Global integration, social disintegration: Edward Long’s History Jamaica (1774)”

Maohong Bao, “Three Chinese Politicians' national narratives of Global Integration and Their Influences on History Writing in China”

Haneda Masashi, “Tōyō (the East) and Asia: The Transition of Japanese Self-Consciousness from the 1850s to the 1940s”

A workshop titled “Nations, Empires and Other World Products: Making Narratives Across Borders” was held at Princeton University on Friday, January 10, 2020. Some GHC researchers have been involved in joint research titled “National Narratives of Global Integration” since 2017, and this workshop was planned for the purpose of publication of the achievements of this joint research in combination with the outcomes of the efforts of two further international research teams. The following four papers under discussion at this workshop had not yet undergone sufficient exchanges of views due to absence or failure to submit a paper at the three similar workshops held thus far (Princeton, January 2018; Paris, June 2018 and Tokyo, January 2019).

On the day of the workshop, besides the convener, Professor Jeremy Adelman, and the four authors, joint editor of the book that is to be published, Professor Andreas Eckert (Humboldt University, Berlin), GHC member Professor Sheldon Garon (Princeton University) and Associate Professor Beth Lew-Williams (Princeton University) also attended.

As the papers had been distributed beforehand, the attendees were participating in the workshop having already read them, and the one hour allotted to each author was almost totally given over to questions and exchanges of views regarding the contents of the papers. This was the same format as in the GHC summer school. With the number of participants being limited, friendly but concentrated, in-depth and intellectually satisfying discussions were held regarding each of the papers.

Following the completion of the workshop, based on the exchanges of views at the total of four meetings, including this one, Professor Adelman sent to all joint research participants a guideline summarizing anew the significance of the publication and points to bear in mind when writing. All participants are to follow this guideline and complete their final manuscripts by June of this year. Publication of the book will take place in 2021 and we look forward with great pleasure to the publication as an achievement of this full-scale joint research program. (HANEDA Masashi)
