「ストリート」の息づき：都市空間利用への世界史からの眼差し

趣旨説明：

本 ワークショップは、中近世から現代への「ストリート」の都市空間における作用の比較研究に関心をもち、来日するダニエレ・ファン・デン・ホイフェル Danielle van den Heuvel 氏（ケント大学）の提案で、開催いたします。氏の提案趣旨は、以下の英文となります。

Street life: comparing the workings of urban space across the globe.

This workshop aims to broaden our understanding of the role of streets in the context of the preindustrial city by bringing together scholars from different backgrounds with an interest in urban life and urban space. Much of the lives of urban dwellers was played out in town and city streets and other open spaces. This is where people came together to work, shop, and eat, but also to fight, celebrate, show their devotion, and express their grievances. In recent years the pre-modern street has benefited from a renewed scholarly interest. However, much of the work on street life has tended to focus on a single locality, often a particular neighbourhood, town or city, and much of the scholarship on streets remains confined to specific countries. Finally, it is likely that urban street life varied significantly across the globe, due to differences in culture, religion, building styles, and the economy for instance. While most scholars acknowledge this, systematic comparisons across different geographical, chronological and cultural contexts are rare. Using this workshop as a facilitator for thinking about how to compare urban outdoor life across time and space, we aim to develop strategies and methods to contrast and compare the dynamics of streets, the activities that took place in streets, and the role streets played in urban society before industrialisation took place.

Potential topics for discussion in the workshop include (but are not limited to): street economy (selling and making, port workers), architecture, the relationship between the indoors and outdoors, public and private, the sanitation of streets, urban improvement, gender and public space, the representation of streets.

Contributions are welcomed from scholars with a wide variety of backgrounds including (but not limited to): history, art history, urban studies, architecture, sociology, anthropology, economics and economic history.

ファ ン・デン・ホイフェル氏は、オランダ出身で、近世オランダ都市における女性の労働、とりわけ商業活動、および近世オランダ・イギリス都市のストリートセ ラー（街売）でこれまで多数の著作があります。博士論文をはじめとした著作は多数の学会から受賞され、近世社会経済史では今もっとも活躍する若手歴史家の 一人です。

提案を受けて、共同主催者として思い起こしたのは、日本では、「比較都市史」「港町研究会」「ストリートの人類学」そして最近の 「都市史学会」をはじめとした諸活動により、各国史・時代史の枠組み内を超えた都市史の共同研究が、世界的にみても精力的に推進されていることです。こう した諸成果を踏まえつつ、このワークショップでは、都市住民の活動が行われた場としての「ストリート」に注目し、さまざまな地域をとりあげて討論しあい、 世界史において、都市空間の論点として何が重要なのかを、掘り起こす場としてきたいと考えました。

　すでに、諸成果が明らかにしているように、「ストリート」自体、中世のイギリス・ドイツ・ネーデルランド都市などのガバナンスを前提とした用語であり、日本語では直接的に対応する訳語が見出しにくいものです。

本 ワークショップにおける「ストリート」とは、第一に、一定数以上の都市住民が利用可能な、都市に属するオープン・スペースと定義します。その意味で、路・ 街・通り・道・水路・運河・広場のすべてを含むことにします。戸外空間のほか、パッサージュ、アーケード、バザールをはじめ、一定の人通りの見込まれる室 内空間も対象とします。

第二の定義を、「道（みち）」の要素において、都市内外へのフローを規定するインフラと置きます。その観点から、水 路や運河が都市の空間作用にどのような影響を与えているかを問題とし、さらに物理的なインフラとしての「道」のみならず、移民をはじめとした都市外集団 が、都市内にいたるアクセスとして概念的にどのように都市空間を利用していたかも問題にしていきたいと考えます。

ワークショップの言語は英語で、参加者は20分程度の発表を行い、それに対して20分程度討論を行う形で進行する予定です。最終プログラムは5月中に発表する予定です。
