Concept

This is a challenging academic project to produce a new perception of world history through discussions among scholars around the world. The University of Tokyo, Princeton University, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales at Paris and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin in collaboration with the Freie Universität Berlin form the bases for creating an international network of historians interested in world and global history and the development of joint research and education programs on the methodology, interpretation, understanding and description of that history. Through this project, we would like to make available to the world Japan’s finest achievements in the humanities and social sciences.
The four institutions will prepare their own budgets for GHC activities separately. The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science will support the project at The University of Tokyo in the framework of its Core-to-Core program from April 2014 until March 2019.

Outline

I. Targets of the Project

1. To establish a base for an international network of research and education concerning a new history of the world. The network is open to all who are interested in developing this new history. The core at The University of Tokyo is to be a center of world history studies for Japanese scholars and a hub in East Asia working together with Korean and Chinese historians.

2. To take advantage of this international network and the sharing of its platform by all the participating institutions to interpret and understand the new history of the world that the contemporary world needs, and to spread this understanding through various activities, including seminars, lectures, publications and websites.

3. To work together with historians in the field of national and regional history and encourage them to re-examine conventional interpretations in their particular research fields and use the results of this re-examination for the further development of a new history of the world. To galvanize historical studies as a whole through this two-way interaction.

II. Plan for Action

1. Joint Research

  • 1) To hold a large-scale conference once a year with the participation of principal members from the four institutions.
  • 2) To hold a series of small-scale seminars on a specific theme.
  • 3) To send researchers to other bases and promote the exchange of research.
  • 4) To establish a common website and upload rich and useful information rapidly. To publish research in English.

2. Raising the Next Generation

  • 1) To engage in the mutual exchange of young researchers and PDs.
  • 2) To dispatch PhD candidates and form a mentors’ team for them.
  • 3) To hold a summer program for graduate students once a year in turns.
  • 4) To set up an online education system through which students at different institutions can learn and discuss together.
