September - December 2016

Michael FACIUS is Research Fellow and PhD student at Friedrich Meinecke Institute of History and the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) “Episteme in Motion”, Freie Universität Berlin. In his dissertation, he examines how "Chinese knowledge" (an umbrella term for all kinds of systematic knowledge relating to China or based on Chinese texts) in 19th century Japan contributed to and was reshaped by globalization. During his stay at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, he is preparing a post-doc project on the multiple faces of the "Early Modern" in 20th century Japan. This project aims to contribute to a reevaluation of concepts of “modernity” by interrogating the ways in which actors in various fields such as historiography, exhibitions and public discourse apprehended the characteristics, spatiality and temporality of the period and its relationship to the present.
