Junior & Visiting member Workshop

/ 7

1. Wolfgang Thiele (Berlin Humboldt and Free University), “Taiwanese Nationalism and the Global Decolonisation Discourse”

2. Miyabi Goto (Princeton University), “Negative Construction of the Absolute in Meiji Japan’s Writing Practices”

3. Lisa Hellman, “The Kalmyk Court from Within: an Alternative History of Globalization”

4. Lei Qinyuan, “Science and Technology Debates in Interwar East Asia”

5. Lee Ju-Ling, “Clothing the Body, Changing Identity: the Case of Japanese in Colonial Taiwan (1895-1908) and Korea (1876-1910)”

6. Elijah Greenstein, “National Fleet, Global Industry: the Politics of Japanese Shipping in the Early Twentieth Century”

At the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, the University of Tokyo, which is the Tokyo headquarters for the Global History Collaborative (GHC), a large number of young foreign research fellows visit to work on research related to new history of the world  / global history. Juinor & Visiting member workshop was held on Monday July 11th for the foreign fellows to meet with young Japanese research fellows and exchange information and ideas. The names of presenters and titles of their presentations were as follows. The session was hosted by Professor Masashi Haneda, GHC Tokyo representative.

Aside from the presenters, many young researchers from City College of New York, Princeton University, The University of Tokyo and GHC participated. Peking University Professor Bao Maohong , who had just arrived to his post as a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, also attended and participated in the discussion.

Each presenter had 20 minutes to give their presentation, and the following 30 minutes were set aside for questions and comments. The presentations by the four graduate students were introductions to the contents of nearly perfected master’s theses or doctoral dissertations. The two post-doc fellows gave a summary of the new research they will be working on (Lisa Hellman), and introduced the contents of a summary study aiming for publication, after an extension of their doctoral dissertation (Lee Ju-Ling).

All of the presentations involved advanced subject matter that drew very interesting questions from new angles. Many valuable and constructive comments and suggestions were given, and it was unfortunate that due to time constraints we were unable to discuss every topic in depth.

New young research fellows will join the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia this fall, so we would like to plan and hold a second workshop later this year. (Masashi Haneda)
