三つの基本的な問題関心があります。一つ目は日本近現代史、もう一つは「宗教」と近現代社会の世俗性との関係、三つめは「自由」概念とナショナリズムとの関係です。2016年秋に出版されるThe Origin of Modern Shinto in Japan: the Vanquished Gods of Izumoは、「神道」といったものが如何に政教分離の制度化を通して日本近代国家の成立を可能にしたかをめぐっての問でした。今取り掛かっているテーマは、日本近代化と日本帝国の中の「裏日本」という言説の歴史です。

I am currently interested in three basic research topics: first, modern Japanese history and new ways of narrating that history; second, the relationship between “religion” and “secular” modern society; and third, the relationship between “freedom” and nationalism. My fist book “The Origin of Modern Shinto in Japan: the Vanquished Gods of Izumo” (Bloomsbury 2016) investigated how “Shinto” enabled the institutionalization of church-state separation, thereby the establishment of the modern Japanese state in the Meiji period (1868-1912). I am currently exploring the history of the idea of Ura-Nihon or “the Underside of Japan” in the context of Japan’s modernization and the formation of the Japanese empire in northeast Asia (1868-1952).
