早稲田大学政治経済学部経済学科卒業（1996年）、早稲田大学大学院経済学研究科修士課程修了（1998年）。ライデン大学にて博士学位取得（2005年）。西南学院大学講師・准教授を経て、2012年より現職（東洋史学講座）。専門は、東南アジア史、アジア経済史、海域アジア史、東インド会社史などであり、歴史学の方法やグローバル・ヒストリーなどにも関心がある。

SHIMADA Ryuto is Associate Professor in Asian History. He studied Asian economic history in Waseda University, Tokyo (BA in Economics (1996) and MA in Economics (1998)) and obtained PhD from Leiden University in 2005. After he had lecturer- and associate professorship in economic history at Seinan Gakuin University, Fukuoka, between 2006 and 2012, he has taught Southeast Asian history at the University of Tokyo. He is currently interested in maritime Asian history, history of East India Companies, methodology of historiography and global history.
