東京大学大学院単位取得退学、博士（文学）。フランス植民地期のアルジェリアを中心として、近代の地中海における人の移動、法文化、都市空間の形成などを研究している。著書『地中海帝国の片影』でサントリー学芸賞（思想・歴史部門）を受賞（2013年）。
KUDO Akihito studied history at the University of Tokyo and at the Universite de Provence. His research interests lie in the French colonialism in Algeria and more generally in the field of law and colonial culture in the Mediterranean. His recent book, The Mirage of the Mediterranean Empire (2013), was awarded the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities.
