The third Congress of the Asian Association of World Historians (AAWH) was held from May 29 to 31, 2015 at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The approximately 200 Congress participants included researchers from not only Asian countries including Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, India, and Qatar but also from the Americas and Europe. Prof. Haneda Masashi delivered a keynote address on the morning of the first day of the Congress titled “Japanese Perspectives on Global History.” After tracing the evolution of the concept of world history in Japan since the Meiji Era, Haneda explained that the terms “new world history” and “global history” are both used to refer to essentially the same concept in Japan and that it is important to pay attention to the background and context in which each term is used. Haneda then went on to raise questions related to the direction in which new world history and global history should head. In addition to Prof. Haneda, three other GHC members (Ota Atsushi, Shimada Tatsuo, and Suzuki Hideaki) made presentations in three different sessions of the eight or nine of the concurrently held sessions at the large-scale congress. The next Congress, which is held every three years, is scheduled to be held in Changchun, China in 2018.
