The Winter Institute on Global History between Princeton and the University of Tokyo (2019.1.24)
On January 24, 2019, the Third University of the Tokyo-Princeton University Winter School was held at the University of Tokyo. Seven doctoral graduate students presented their research papers, and a lively discussion on their papers and future research followed with fruitful advice from Professor Jeremy Adelman from Princeton, and Professor Masashi Haneda, Associate Professor Aya Ikegame, Associate Professor Koji Yamamoto from the University of Tokyo.
Three students reported in the morning, and four reported in the afternoon. The three students in the morning gave a brief oral summary of about five minutes on their research about human rights, colonialism, and development studies, which are important research topics in global history. Other participants presented numerous perspectives from which to develop arguments based on their research interests and background knowledge. After lunch, four students gave presentations on forest management, the labor market, women in the Middle Ages, and environmental history. The arguments in each piece of research were unique and inspiring, and active discussions took place between the students from Princeton and those from the University of Tokyo. The aforesaid professors and advisors also took part and provided useful and incisive comments and hints in order that the students could improve and meet international standards of research. We hope that all the participants can use this opportunity as a stepping stone to further research and make their studies more elaborate. Everyone involved looks forward to sharing progress with one another in future GHC events.
