2013年に東京大学大学院総合文化研究科地域文化研究専攻で修士号取得後、現在同博士課程在学中。日本学術振興会特別研究員（2013年～2016年）。広い意味での研究関心はラテンアメリカ近現代史、狭い意味では20世紀初めの南米南部諸国におけるスポーツをめぐる政治と社会の歴史。近代国民国家の形成と急速なグローバル化というこの時代を特徴づける二つの大きな問題系の中に、近代スポーツの発展を文脈付けることを中心的課題としている。現在取り組んでいる博士論文では、小国ながら特異なスポーツ的発展を見た世紀初頭ウルグアイにおける国家とスポーツとの関係性について、同時代の急進的政治改革というナショナルなファクターと、YMCAや国際オリンピック委員会の関与というグローバルなファクターとの双方の視角から研究を進めている。

Shunsuke Matsuo is a PhD Student in Latin American Studies at the University of Tokyo. His main research interest is the political and social history around sports in early 20th-century South America, particularly in Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile. He is especially interested in how the development of modern sports can be contextualized in two broader transformations that characterize this period: the construction of modern nation-states and the rapid globalization. His doctoral project focuses on Uruguay, in which sports witnessed a peculiar development during the first decades of 20th century in close and intricate interplay with the radical political reform led by José Batlle y Ordóñez as well as the intervention of global sport authorities such as the YMCA and the IOC.
