ニューヨーク市立大学歴史学部准教授。2015-16年東京大學東洋文化研究所の日本学術振興会特別研究員。日本帝国主義史、日中関係史、台湾史に関心がある。 現在の研究テーマは日本の台湾植民地統治と南中国、東南アジアの南進政策。プリントン大学歴史学科の博士号取得 (2014年),東京大學東洋文化研究所訪問研究員 (2011-12年),中央研究院台湾歴史研究所訪問研究員 (2010-11年),エール大学歴史学部卒業 (2004年)。
Seiji Shirane is Assistant Professor of History at the City College of New York (CUNY) and a 2015-16 SSRC-JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia. He specializes in modern Japan, especially the Japanese empire, Sino-Japanese relations, and colonial Taiwan. He is currently revising his dissertation into a a book manuscript titled, Empire’s Southern Gate: Colonial Taiwan in Japan’s Imperial Expansion into South China and Southeast Asia, 1895-1945.
Born in Tokyo and a native of New York City, Professor Shirane received degrees from Yale University (B.A. History, 2000) and Princeton University (Ph.D. History, 2014). He has studied and worked several years in Japan (Tokyo), China (Guangzhou, Beijing, Xiamen), and Taiwan (Taipei), and his research has received the support of Fulbright, Social Science Research Council, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
